In class to review for the test, students got into Expert Groups to write a series of 6 questions on a general topic covered in Unit 2.  These 6 questions had to include at least 3 “higher level” questions – level 2 or 3 on the Costa’s Level of Questioning handout.

Groups then wrote these questions on a pattern that made a cube, and we rolled the cubes like dice to get the questions to answer.  Erin, Megan, and Dominique were our class scribes and documented the questions for everyone to use to study for the test.

What was the impact of the crusades on Europe?

The Crusades had a dramatic impact on Europe.  This is ironic considering the fact that the Crusaders sought out to conquer or change the Islamic Empire, and ended up far more changed themselves.  Exposure to the Islamic Empire opened their eyes to the tremendous advancements that were developed in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom.  They even took back Greek & Roman texts in arabic.  These ideas laid the foundation for the Renaissance to take place soon after.  Crusaders also brought back with them material goods like soap, spices, fine fabrics, and steel swords. The demand for these goods opened a trading network that was perhaps unexpected.  The Crusades also broke down European feudalism as knights and peasants left to fight in the Crusades.  As they left they would sell or give their lands back to the Kings, which not only increased the power of Kings at the time, but ultimately changed the structure of European society as it evolved into the age of Absolutism.
